Putting the claim that fast fashion is "disposable" to the test.

Day 24: My first Shein casualty

I’ve used the leaf-print backpack 13 times, and it’s already falling apart.

When I first received it through the post, I noticed the loose threads and fraying around the seams.

The seam holding the drawstring in place is stitched with long machine stitches (around 4 millimetres) — not the much shorter stitches that would give the seam more strength.

However, it wasn’t one of the weak points I’d identified where it failed, but at one of the bottom corners of the bag, where the straps are attached. The fabric frayed along one edge, causing it to come apart.

I’m patching it with some fabric from a old cotton sheet, which I hope will hold it together.

Readers might have noticed I started the challenge with a second, thrifted bag. However, I decided to use only the new one I bought directly from Shein to really see how it performs. Frankly, I wasn’t impressed.

I like a larger handbag that I can use for everything from purse-phone-keys, to spare jumpers, to my daughter’s toys, to a small grocery shop.

I have a similar bag that I received 12 years ago as a fashion week freebie. I must have used it hundreds of times over the years, including for heavy groceries. Although part of the logo peeled off a while ago, all these years later one of the seams is only just starting to come apart.

The Shein bag lasted less than two weeks of wears.
