The global fashion landscape is changing rapidly, and Chinese online marketplaces like Temu, Shein, and AliExpress are at the forefront of this shift. A poll conducted by Omnisend of 4,000 consumers across the US, the UK, Canada and Australia highlights the growing popularity of these platforms.
According to the survey, 60% of respondents have shopped at Chinese online retailers in the past year, with many choosing to shop at more than one. Temu and Shein have quickly gained familiarity, with 72% and 55% of respondents aware of these brands, respectively. Shein, in particular, has made a significant impact in the fashion industry, with 57% of those who shop there buying adult clothing.
While affordable prices and a vast selection have drawn consumers to these marketplaces, there’s a critical issue at play—one that often goes unnoticed in the quest for a good deal: sustainability.
The appeal of cheap, trendy clothing cannot be overstated, with 48% of respondents having purchased from Temu and 42% from Shein. However, the low-cost model employed by many of these brands comes at a significant environmental and ethical cost.
Interestingly, the survey also uncovered that 94% of respondents do not trust Temu, yet they continue to shop there.
Despite their rising popularity, Chinese marketplaces still lag behind established platforms like Amazon in terms of customer satisfaction. Respondents rated Amazon an average of 8.1 out of 10, citing quality, fast delivery, and ease of purchase as key benefits. Temu, by comparison, scored 6.8, with complaints of poor quality, slow shipping, and overwhelming advertising.
As consumers, we have more choices than ever before. But with choice comes responsibility. While Chinese marketplaces like Temu and Shein offer tempting deals, it’s crucial to consider the long-term environmental and ethical impacts of our purchases.
