Shein’s 2023 sustainability report has revealed that two instances of child labour were identified in its supply chain last year.
The fast fashion giant appears to be tightening its oversight of suppliers amid ongoing scrutiny of its labour practices, as it prepares to hold an IPO in London.
Shein said it took immediate action, temporarily suspending orders from the implicated suppliers and only resuming business after corrective measures were implemented. This included the termination of contracts with underage workers, ensuring full payment of wages, providing medical checkups, and facilitating the safe return of children to their families.
“From Q1 to Q3 2023, our SRS [Shein Responsible Sourcing] audits uncovered two cases of child labor in our supply chain. Upon discovering these violations, Shein suspended orders from the contract manufacturers and undertook investigations. In accordance with the SRS Policy in place at the time, errant suppliers were given 30 days to remediate their offenses,” the report said.
“In Q4 2023, SRS auditors did not find any cases of child labor or forced labor. We remain vigilant in guarding against such violations going forward, and in line with current policies, will terminate any noncompliant suppliers.”
Shein’s supply chain practices have long been under fire, with critics citing poor working conditions and exploitation of labour, often in the form of excessive overtime and low wages.
In response to mounting pressure, the company now says violations involving child or forced labor will result in the immediate termination of supplier contracts. The company asserts that no further instances of child labour were discovered in the final quarter of 2023.
