Putting the claim that fast fashion is "disposable" to the test.

Day 68: Why is Shein telling me to hand wash my cotton knickers?

Hand wash a pair of cotton knickers? I don’t think so. That was my reaction when I read the care labels in my Shein capsule wardrobe. It wasn’t just the delicate mesh lingerie or bras with the hand-wash only labels; even the three-pack of cotton knickers and a simple £2.75 cotton t-shirt from Shein came with the same instructions. But, why?

Traditionally, hand-wash labels are reserved for delicate or embellished garments, where machine washing could cause damage. It makes sense for fragile items, but surely not for a basic cotton tee. As it turns out, there’s a different reason behind many of these labels.

According to Good Housekeeping magazine, “Some manufacturers put hand-wash only labels on clothes simply because they haven’t tested them in the washing machine. This is to cover themselves, so that if you do machine-wash something and it gets damaged, you can’t blame them.” In other words, it’s more about liability than fabric preservation. So, if you decide to toss that “hand-wash only” item in the machine, you’re technically taking a risk, but it might not be as risky as you think.

Toms Guide also sheds light on this issue, reassuring us that “you can breathe a sigh of relief to know that ‘hand wash only’ clothes can go in the washing machine, but with care.” In fact, washing machines often have a “hand wash” or “delicate” cycle that mimics the gentle cleaning process of handwashing. These settings use cold water, minimal agitation, and a slower spin, making them ideal for washing silk, wool, synthetic fabrics, and even garments with embroidery or sequins.

If you’re planning to test the waters (pun intended) with your washing machine, here are a few tips from Toms Guide: use a detergent made specifically for delicate fabrics; place hand-wash items in mesh laundry bags for extra protection; and always air dry your delicate garments instead of tossing them in the dryer.

I’ve not put the flower pattern bra in the washing machine but everything else has to take its chances on the delicates cycle. So far they’ve not come to any harm. And given there have been some very hot days this summer I’m sure everyone around me should be grateful I’m giving my undies and polyester tops a proper wash.
