Putting the claim that fast fashion is "disposable" to the test.

Day 69: Now the new season’s here I’m starting to hate my Shein capsule wardrobe!

It’s the first of September today. I’m 69 days into the 90 days of Shein challenge — only 21 days to go, yay! — and I’m starting to get seriously fed up with it.

Usually the end of summer / early autumn has that fantastic back to school feeling, and when it comes to fashion it’s a time to explore new trends, check out the new collections in the shops and fall back in love with some old autumn favourites, getting wool coats, cashmere jumpers and sleek leather boots of summer storage.

Looking at the autumn-winter 2024-25 trends, there’s some stunning tailoring and gorgeous tweeds. I love the rich chocolatey palates of the upcoming season, and some of the new collections already in the stores.

I’m wearing the same pair of denim cargo trousers I’ve had on all summer (acceptable) with a pale grey polyester t-shirt and a pair of shabby black canvas shoes. Even the layering items like the beige trench coat and green jumper, both of which looked good earlier in the summer, are now starting to look simply … wrong.

It’s mostly my fault. If I hadn’t taken an unscheduled three-week break a few weeks into the challenge I’d be done with the 90 days of Shein challenge by now and already starting to rediscover my “own” clothes.

But I’ve come this far, and I’m determined not to give up.

Everything I wore on day 69 of the 90 days of Shein challenge:

SHEIN LUNE Women’s Batwing Sleeve Round Neck T-shirt, grey

Dazy-Less Drawstring Waist Cargo Wide Leg Denim Pants Baggy Jeans

Burgundy hoodie (thrifted)

2024 New Style College Wind Black & White Outdoor Sports Shoes for Women

Allover Leaf Graphic Drawstring Backpack

DAZY Women’s Floral Print Sleeveless Round Neck Sleep Dress,

Lace Flower Pattern Thin Underwear Set, bra

(admission: laundry crisis at home means I’m not wearing Shein socks or pants today)
