Putting the claim that fast fashion is "disposable" to the test.

Day 71: Bobbles and bad smells

Two things I’ve noticed over the last few days, neither of them very welcome.

First, the amount of bobbling has increased on several of the garments. It’s particularly noticeable on the dark red hoodie (where it became apparent from the second time I wore it), the trench coat, the pink lace bra and the grey t-shirt.

Bobbling, also known as pilling, occurs when fibres on the surface of fabric clump together to form small, fuzzy balls.

This often happens in high-friction areas of clothing, like the seat, collar, cuffs, and underarms, giving the fabric a worn or unattractive look.

Second issue is bad smells. I’m noticing it particularly with the trench coat at the moment. We’ve had a run of wet weather meaning it got repeatedly soaked through (it’s not actually waterproof at all) then left to dry, sometimes for as long as two days, in a damp hall.

It’s a similar situation for the poor old shoes, which have also got wet through multiple times. The soles are in such a poor state now, they let through any water lingering on the pavement.

Both the polyester tops become less than fragrant even after a single wear — and I want to assure you that I shower daily and wear deodorant — and lets not even get started on the two pairs of polyester knickers.
