Putting the claim that fast fashion is "disposable" to the test.

Day 73: Are Shein and Temu products safe for your kids?

This blog has mostly looked at fashion for women on Shein, as that’s what I’m wearing for my (nearly over) 90 days of Shein challenge. However, I have a tween daughter who is very well aware of both Shein and Temu after seeing ads pop up on all our devices.

Now the two popular low-cost e-commerce giants based in China, are under scrutiny in the US, where the government is considering an investigation into sales of what’s been described as potentially “deadly baby and toddler products”.

Concerns have escalated about how these companies comply with US safety regulations, especially given their rapid rise in popularity.

In an open letter, Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) members Peter Feldman and Douglas Dziak expressed their concerns over reports that unsafe children’s products are readily available on the two platforms, reported CNN. They urged commission staff to investigate how Shein and Temu handle safety compliance, particularly in relation to their reliance on low-cost, direct-to-consumer models.

One focal point is the use of the “de minimis” rule, which allows products valued at $800 or less to bypass tariffs. Many of the items sold by these companies fall into this category, including everything from fast fashion to household goods. This tariff loophole raises questions about the quality and oversight of the goods entering the U.S. market.

Feldman and Dziak are pushing for a comprehensive investigation into these companies’ safety controls, third-party seller relationships, and transparency about product imports.

Shein, in response, stated that customer safety is a “top priority”, noting significant investments in strengthening compliance. Temu also affirmed its commitment to ensuring that all sellers on its platform adhere to relevant laws and safety standards.

As these companies continue to dominate the US market with their rock-bottom prices, they also face increased scrutiny over sustainability and ethical practices.
